Maria Trickett is a child of The Workhouse, having entered the dreaded institution beside her mother. Given a basic education, her superiors soon realise that Maria would be a suitable candidate for a position 'In Service' and she soon finds herself working as a maid for a well-to-do family of The Mews. But life becomes even harder for Maria, as she becomes the victim of another's spite. Wrongly accused of something that she is not allowed to contest, she finds herself isolated, half-starved and alone. Hard-done-by and left with only her thoughts, Maria realises she has no happy memories, at all, and that her time within The Mews would soon be over. She finds herself alone within her despair. But there is hope for Maria - and it appears in the shape of a true friend. Charles-Henry will help Maria move into the future and help her to find her own Special Memories.
