Written by a professor with years of experience teaching Old Norse and Icelandic, this user-friendly 3rd edition assumes no previous language training. Beginner to advanced has everything in one book: graded saga readings, vocabulary, grammar exercises, runes, and pronunciation. There are maps and sections on Viking history, literature, and myth. In response, we re-organized the book, shortened the lessons, and rewrote individual grammar and pronunciation sections. The new short, focused lessons with streamlined explanations and an innovative word-frequency method speeds learning. You quickly learn to read original saga passages and Viking-Age runes from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Modern Icelandic has changed relatively little from Old Norse, and the learner is well on the way to mastering Modern Icelandic.
