Es escritor profesional desde 1979, se graduó de periodismo en la Northwestern University, y vive en Nuevo México. Es el autor de la afamada serie de fantasía épica Canción de hielo y fuego, en la que se ha basado la serie de HBO, Juego de Tronos.
