The building has stood for a hundred and fifty-three years. In sixteen days, it will not.

Kate Welton has documented six closure-eve buildings — prisons, sanatoria, an orphanage outside Hartford. She knows what an empty institution smells like. She knows what its files don't say. So when the state hires her to record Marston Hill State Hospital before the wreckers arrive, she comes prepared: blueprints, infrared, fourteen days, a small careful contract that will cover six months of her mother's assisted-living rent.

The Kirkbride asylum has other plans.

On Day Four, the infrared finds a chamber that exists on no architectural drawing. On Day Eight, the wall comes down. The body inside is a hundred years old. The body behind it is not.

As a nor'easter closes the roads and the demolition clock keeps counting, Kate works alone through the building's failing wings — barred windows, sealed corridors, a hydrotherapy basement she has been warned not to enter alone. The archive begins to surrender its dead: women committed by husbands, women transferred to destinations unrecorded, women walled into the reform-era renovations of 1923. And someone living — credentialed, presentable, in no particular hurry — keeps appearing on the path at dusk.

Three states away, Kate's mother is losing her own walls. Alzheimer's is doing to Margaret what the asylum once did to its patients, on a different timeline. Every call Kate lets go to voicemail rhymes with a record the institution has lost on purpose.

A contemporary gothic in the tradition of Mexican Gothic and The Thirteenth Tale, The Walls Remember is a novel about institutional violence, female witness, and the architecture of what we bury so it can keep happening.

Some walls keep secrets. Some walls, when they come down, give them back.
