Brilliant, fresh, immediate, and eloquent, these celebrated Mellon Lectures are a bravura intellectual performance. Isaiah Berlin surveys the many attempts to define romanticism, distills its essence, traces its developments from its first stirrings to its apotheosis, and shows how it still permeates our outlook. He ranges over a cast of some of the greatest thinkers and artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Kant, Rousseau, Diderot, Schiller, the Schlegels, Novalis, Goethe, Blake, Byron, and Beethoven. The ideas and attitudes of these and other figures, Berlin argues, helped to shape twentieth-century nationalism, existentialism, democracy, totalitarianism, and our ideas about heroic individuals, self-fulfillment, and the exalted place of art. This new edition, illustrated for the first time, also features a new foreword by philosopher John Gray, in which he discusses Berlin's belief that the influence of romanticism has been unpredictable and contradictory in the extreme, fuelling anti-liberal political movements but also reinvigorating liberalism; a revised text; and a new appendix that includes some of Berlin's correspondence about the lectures and the reactions to them.

Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997) fue un influyente filósofo y pensador británico de origen letón, reconocido por sus aportes a la teoría política y la historia de las ideas. Nacido en Riga, Letonia, su familia emigró a Inglaterra en 1921. Estudió en la Universidad de Oxford, donde se convirtió en fellow del All Souls College y del New College, además de fundar el Wolfson College. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, trabajó como diplomático en Washington y Moscú. Fue presidente de la Academia Británica de 1974 a 1978 y recibió diversos premios por su labor intelectual .

Su ensayo más conocido, El erizo y el zorro (1953), interpreta la visión de la historia de León Tolstói a través de una metáfora de Arquíloco: “El zorro sabe muchas cosas, pero el erizo sabe una sola y grande”. Berlin clasifica a los pensadores en dos tipos: los "erizos", que estructuran su visión del mundo en torno a una única idea central, y los "zorros", que tienen una perspectiva más dispersa y múltiple. Tolstói, según Berlin, encarna ambos roles: por su talento, un zorro; por sus convicciones, un erizo .

John Gray es un destacado filósofo, escritor y político británico. Es catedrático de pensamiento europeo en la London School of Economics. Ha trabajado en diversas universidades, entre las que destacan Yale y Oxford.
En la década de los 80 fue un importante defensor de la New Right y en los 90, del Nuevo Laborismo. Ahora Gray piensa que el espectro político dividido entre derecha e izquierda ya no es viable. Es un pesimista para con la humanidad.
Colabora regularmente con The Guardian, New Statesman, y The Times Literary Supplement.
