Emily X. R. Pan nació en Illinois como hija única de padres taiwaneses que emigraron a Estados Unidos, aunque en la actualidad reside en Brooklyn. Tras estudiar en la Escuela de Negocios Stern de la Universidad de Nueva York, trabajó de redactora jefa en la Washington Square Review.

En 2017 publicó El asombroso color del después (Nocturna, 2020), que entró en la lista de best sellers del New York Times, se tradujo a siete idiomas, obtuvo críticas magníficas y ganó múltiples premios.
