Nació en Gran Bretaña y fue profesor de filosofía en Heytrhop. Comenzó a escribir textos de historia de la filosofía para sus alumnos y de ese intento pedagógico nació su monumental obra Historia de la Filosofía. Hoy día está considerada su obra magna y la mejor introducción a la filosofía occidental que se haya hecho nunca. Esta obra fue dirigida por Manuel Sacristán y traducida por él mismo y otros prestigiosos filósofos españoles. De gran interés es también su debate con Bertrand Russell sobre la existencia de Dios, originalmente radiado en la BBC. Entre el resto de su obra podemos destacar Nietzsche, Shopenhauer y Santo Tomás de Aquino.
