Howard Stevens is 73 years old. He's had a good and full life, two wives five children and four careers. He made enough money and gave when he could. For most of the past three months he has been pestered by memories of episodes and events from his childhood growing up in New Jersey. He decides to spend the next Six Sundays in church where he has both peace and quiet and uninterrupted time to review and put in order his memories. There is a seven-year-old neighbor friend who dies of an accidental gunshot, a dear friend who later becomes his girlfriend, an important adult commits suicide and one of his three best friends drowns. His life revolves around doing well in school, exploring a wood, a seashore, playing baseball and sailing at a yacht club. It all comes to an end when an ugly rumor about him and a young woman is spread throughout the school by some of his baseball teammates. He loses his teammates friendship, the love of his life, his yacht club friends and all but one of his best friends. He is shunned and isolated and within five months he and his family move 1200 miles away and Howard decides It's a God given second chance and he decides to move on, be more careful and to not look back. But at seventy -three he is suddenly being continually reminded of these people and what took place Howard spends the next Six Sundays in church recounting and coming to terms with the joys, struggles and tragedies that shaped and determined his young life. Nothing was ever resolved about any of the heartbreak and he did not stay in touch with or see any of these people after the family moved. At first, he is puzzled by theses memories from so long ago and resists them. However, he returns to the memories with the perspective of an older man who soon enough realizes there is something important here. That he can come to a more complete understanding of himself and ultimately let go and forgive both himself and the others their part in what happened.
