Moshe Lewin was a collective farm worker in the USSR and a soldier in the Soviet army. He later became director of studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, a fellow of the Kennan Institute, a senior fellow of Columbia University's Russian Institute, and is now emeritus professor of history at The University of Pennsylvania.

Moshe Lewin (1921–2010) fue un destacado historiador marxista y uno de los principales especialistas en Rusia y la Unión Soviética. Nacido en Vilnius (Lituania) en el seno de una familia judía, huyó de la invasión nazi y se refugió en la Unión Soviética, donde trabajó en fábricas y sirvió en el ejército.Tras la guerra, emigró a Israel y posteriormente a Francia, donde comenzó su carrera académica tardíamente, doctorándose en la Sorbona de París. Fue profesor en la Universidad de Pensilvania (Estados Unidos) y vivió sus últimos años en Francia, colaborando habitualmente con Le Monde Diplomatique.Lewin revolucionó la sovietología occidental al alejarse de la visión reduccionista de la Guerra Fría. Su obra se centró en el análisis estructural de la sociedad, las dinámicas burocráticas y el papel del campesinado soviético, demostrando cómo estas bases sociales condicionaron el desarrollo del régimen.Entre sus libros más influyentes destacan El último combate de Lenin y su obra magna, El siglo soviético, en la que abordó la complejidad, el ascenso y el colapso del sistema soviético.
