Drawing on a wide range of interviews and discussions with teachers, this book focuses on the role of curriculum postholders, or ‘consultants’, with specialist knowledge, and on the importance of teacher participation in curriculum development. The concept of a ‘collegial’ school, founded on both respect for specialist expertise and commitment to teacher collaboration, is offered as a model for effective practice.
The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 analyses the current context of school-based curriculum development in primary and middle schools. It assesses the historical-political background, examining the theories relating to curriculum change, the position of the postholder, approaches to in-school evaluation and the role of the headteacher. Part 2 provides empirical evidence from three detailed case studies in particular settings. Part 3 offers a more speculative discussion of the ideal collegial school and delineates the difficulties facing teachers today.
Developing the Primary School Curriculum was designed for primary and middle school teachers on BEd. Diploma and MEd. courses and for those on pre-service BEd. and PGCE courses. Influential at the time, today it can be read in its historical context.
