Propelled into early marriage by the potential birth of their first child, this memoir tells the story of a young couple and their family living in North East Scotland on different farms, through the war years and beyond from 1938 to 1954. The life of the farm worker was hard, and has been acknowledged, but so was life for their wives and children. With a cold-water tap outside and only a fire to cook on, the work of the housewife was unrelenting so all children had to help as they grew up. Her skills at eking out the weekly wage for food and clothing, and her ability to knit and sew were often taxed to the limit. This story also gives an insight into the quality of education of the couple's children, especially regarding the primary schools they attended. In addition, it relates how the support within and without the family in the years of poverty was vital.
