Section Five: Delegation & Control Mistakes
Delegation is one of the most misunderstood skills in leadership. Most people treat it as a time management tool, a way to get things off their plate when they are overwhelmed. But delegation done well is something far more powerful. It is an investment in your team's capability, a signal of trust, and the only sustainable path to scaling your own impact beyond what one person can physically accomplish.
The problem is that most leaders delegate poorly, if they delegate at all.
Some cannot let go. They built their career on doing, on being the one with the answers, the one who gets things done. The shift to trusting others with that work feels not just uncomfortable but almost dangerous. So they hold on too long, take on too much, and become the bottleneck in every process that matters.
Others delegate enthusiastically but carelessly. They hand off the task without the authority, the resources, or the context the person actually needs to succeed. Then they hover. Or they disappear entirely and only resurface when something goes wrong. And when it does go wrong, as it inevitably will without proper support, they reclaim the credit for the lessons learned while leaving the team member with the blame.
The most corrosive mistake in this chapter is the one that quietly destroys morale: taking credit for work you delegated and letting the person who did it stand in your shadow. Nothing poisons a team's trust faster. Nothing signals more clearly that a leader values their own image over the people they are supposed to serve.
True delegation is not about offloading tasks. It is about building leaders. That requires intention, clarity, and a willingness to share both the accountability and the recognition.
