Anne didn't understand the fuss, as she was only four at the time. The concerns of a little girl focused on picking dandelions and daffodils, running with friends in the park in the spring, while blissfully ignorant of the serious political rumblings that concerned those of deeper understanding. She was a lively child who loved life, although at times a little shy. Her family attended synagogue every now and then on Saturdays, but she understood very little of the services. She just wanted to play with her peers. At her first school, she easily made friends because of her ready smile and outgoing, friendly demeanor. She learned Dutch and other necessary subjects of the school children at the time. She was a normal little child, with the normal desires of a young girl; ones of dolls and toys and pretty things. Otto made certain she knew nothing at this early age of bigotry and hatred and all things ugly and loud and screaming from an angry, middle-aged man by the name of Adolf Hitler.
