Ta-Nehisi Coates nació en Baltimore en 1975, es un escritor, periodista y activista estadounidense, reconocido por su análisis profundo sobre la historia y la experiencia afroamericana en Estados Unidos.
Hijo de William Paul Coates, exmiembro de las Panteras Negras y fundador de Black Classic Press, y de Cheryl Waters, profesora, Coates creció en un entorno que valoraba la literatura y la conciencia política. Estudió en la Universidad de Howard, aunque no se graduó, y comenzó su carrera periodística en medios como The Village Voice y Time.

Entre sus obras más influyente encontramos Entre el mundo y yo (2015), escrita como una carta a su hijo, donde reflexiona sobre la identidad negra y la violencia racial en Estados Unidos. Este libro ganó el National Book Award y fue finalista del Pulitzer.
