Lyon 1886 - Lyon 1944. Impartió clases de historia medieval en la Universidad de Estrasburgo y más tarde de historia económica en la Sorbona. Junto con Lucien Febvre editó 'Annales d´Historie Èconomique et Sociale', una revista sobre la historia de la economía francesa que tuvo bastante repercusión en su tiempo. Su afán por fusionar la economía y la historia se aprecia en algunas de sus obras como: 'La Sociedad feudal' o 'Introducción a la Historia'.
