The story of Joseph and the amazing colour dream coat is very well known particularly because of the musical of that name, but like all musicals and stage plays certain facts and implications can be altered to suit the script and music. There is no doubt that Joseph was an amazing character who went through the most severe and life-changing training for his life-saving task of feeding tens of thousands of people through an area wide, very severe drought. But it was his efforts in getting his brothers to acknowledge their sin against him and then show compassion and forgive them totally which was his crowning achievement. In my book, The Origin of Life: God's Relationship With Man in Genesis, the similarities between the life of Joseph and that of the Messiah is detailed, making that a study all of its own. This book examines his life and also the lives of other very ordinary, but truly remarkable Biblical characters, identifying those aspects of their lives from which we, in the 21st century, could well learn a great deal. Just because they lived in the early years of mankind did not mean that they had an easy life. What identified them as special is the way they handled their particular and very real problems and still remained faithful to the Creator God who called them to serve Him. It is the example of such people that assist us to stay focused and serve the same living God they so dutifully and tenaciously served during their life on earth. Studying these characters was an inspiration.
