iyun Li (李翊雲) nació el 4 de noviembre de 1972 en Pekín, China. Se formó inicialmente en ciencias, obteniendo una licenciatura en la Universidad de Pekín y una maestría en inmunología en la Universidad de Iowa. Sin embargo, su pasión por la escritura la llevó a cambiar de rumbo, obteniendo una maestría en escritura creativa en la misma universidad .

Li escribe exclusivamente en inglés y sus obras han sido traducidas a más de 20 idiomas. Entre sus novelas destacan The Vagrants y Where Reasons End, así como su colección de relatos A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, que fue adaptada al cine por Wayne Wang .

Ha recibido numerosos premios, incluyendo el PEN/Hemingway Award, el Windham-Campbell Prize y una beca MacArthur. En 2022, fue elegida para formar parte de la Academia Estadounidense de las Artes y las Ciencias .

Actualmente, Li es profesora de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Princeton. Su vida personal ha influido profundamente en su obra; tras enfrentar episodios de depresión y la trágica pérdida de sus dos hijos por suicidio en 2017 y 2024, respectivamente, ha explorado estos temas en sus escritos, como en su novela Where Reasons End .
