Gregory Madison was happy with his life. He had a close knit family, good friends, and a thriving business. When Gail Chambers, his girlfriend of more than three years, leaves a note that she is breaking up with him and moving to another state, he is surprised, hurt, and angry. Known for being resourceful, he takes the breakup in stride and focuses on growing his business. After a year passes and there is no communication with Gail, Greg receives a telephone call that Gail has been in an automobile accident and his name was found in her wallet as someone to contact in case of an emergency. He is shocked and rushes to the hospital. He finds Gail covered in bandages with only her eyes visible. She is unconscious, but he is led to believe that she will awake the next morning. He returns to the hospital the next morning only to find that she has lapsed into a coma. He blames himself for the accident. He believes that if he had been more responsive to her needs she never would have left and there wouldn't have been an accident. Over the last year as Greg worked closely with Rita Duncan, his administrative assistant, he didn't realize how much he had come to rely on her and that he had a latent affection for her. These feelings become evident when she leaves the company after a misunderstanding with him and another employee. Learning that the employee is devious and has fed him erroneous information about Rita, Greg goes looking for her. When he is unable to find her he feels a sense of helplessness and failure. Gail's coma and losing Rita is the last straw and he plunges down a path of self destruction. Waking up in the hospital after a near fatal alcohol overdose, Greg realizes that he must try to make sense of his feelings about Gail and Rita. As he attempts to do that he learns a valuable lesson about feelings and unconditional love.
