Reseña del libro "Before the Dawn: No. 38 Squadron 1935 - 1940 (en Inglés)"

This book records the formation and operational history of No. 38 Squadron, formed in peace time from No. 99 Squadron, as part of No.3 (Bomber) Group. Like many squadrons formed at that time, it was blessed with the cream of Britain and her Empire's young fighting men. It would be these intrepid individuals that would, when called upon, fight with daring and courage. No. 38 Squadron was initially equipped with the Handley Page Heyford when war with Germany was not even contemplated. This biplane was replaced with the more modern Fairey Hendon. In the first few months of the bomber war, by then equipped with the Vickers Wellington, the squadron stood by patiently while others within the Group suffered grievous losses flying daylight operations against the German Fleet. When finally called upon, the squadron applied itself with ruthless determination. Highly motivated and with an ardent desire to prove themselves, they pressed home their attacks repeatedly. Unlike the mass bombing raids of later years, the crews often took off singly, having planned their own route and attack. Almost totally reliant on the skill of the Observer, they found and attacked small, isolated targets in the occupied territories and Germany. The dedication of the aircrews was matched by the ground crews and backroom staff, who, day after day and regardless of the weather, applied their trades with equal resolve. This success was in no small part due to the exceptional commanding officers and flight commanders. They, and those who served under them, fought in the bloody campaigns over Norway, France, and Germany. In late 1940, No.3 Group would suffer the loss of some of its most experienced and battle-hardened squadrons to bolster firstly the Middle East and then Far East campaigns. One of the first squadrons to be chosen was No.38 Squadron, who along with No.37 and No.215 Squadrons found themselves in the Western Desert. That is a story for another book. Before the Dawn is a fascinating study of a squadron, its men and aircraft, at a less heralded time, but one which is no less deserving of study. Illustrated throughout, the book features photographs of the Heyford and Hendon in squadron service, as well as the more iconic Wellington.
