During a study of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, I noticed that fasting was not discussed with the same background and interest as the other topics from Jesus's teachings. It seemed a study that looked at Bible scriptures on fasting might be beneficial.This discussion begins with who fasted in the Bible, why they fasted, how they fasted, and what was the outcome. After spending time with Bible examples, we discuss Biblical teachings on fasting: what God expected, what made fasts unacceptable, what the Bible does not specify, and some historical and additional general information on fasting.There are several types of fasts mentioned in the Bible. In some religions, millions of people fast each year. Sometimes ignorance breeds fear. If we learn what the Bible says about fasting, it should help us understand when we could benefit from spiritual fasting. Understanding what is expected of Christians provides a tool to improve our relationship with our Lord.The reader is strongly encouraged to read the scriptures and put the passage in context. Quotes are from the American Standard version unless noted otherwise.The objective is to aid understanding and spiritual growth that the use of appropriate fasting can provide. Ultimately, may this study provide an additional tool to improve your relationship with Jehovah.
